Equipotential Surfaces & Field Lines
- Modified from Joe Stieve - You can purchase (or get for free) from your local grocery store the plastic trays in which they sell vegetables and cakes. Print the graph paper and glue it to the underside of the tray. This lab works great everytime. I've modified it for time constraints for just point charges, but you can attach metal stripping to represent a line of charges.

This concept map, most useful for B, shows the relations between the F E U and V equations for both point charges and uniform fields. When my students can recreate this from scratch, the relationships and equations are set in their brains!

Graphics for making circuit images
If you are in need of a reasonably simple way to create circuit diagrams for tests, quizzes, labs, the schematic elements within this PowerPoint will allow to quickly and easily create them so you can copy/paste into other applications.
Only minimal PowerPoint skills required

Lab Type: Problem Solving
Students design a mock-up circuit of a house. They must write-up a schematic diagram, use resistors to adjust voltages & currents (motors & bulbs will operate within their designated ranges), create parallel & series circuits. After schematic approval, students make & test the circuits.
We use 14-2 grounded wire, switches, outlets, & screw caps from Menards / Home Depot / Lowes. We use small 3V motors from a surplus supply store (We use Official AxeMan parts).
The bulbs & Outlets operate at 1.5 V while the motor operates at 3V. This follows most real homes. Most outlets at 120V & outlets for Fridges, dryers etc.. at 240V. Granted these Voltage ranges are accomplished in different manners, but I believe it makes a point with students.
Part 2 has students create a power source to operate the house circuit. The house circuit in part one is powered with 2 D cell batteries.

I usually start with Colorado's PhET sims on Lab Prob 1, then move to real DMM's for the lab probs 2 - 5 that we do.
Batteries, Bulbs, Graphs (and Ohm's Law):
A simulation lab using PhET.
Students create a circuit with n-bulbs (each lab table uses a different number of bulbs).
Lab develops Ohm's law in a kinda Modeling manner.

I have each student work through these one at a time. I do not give formal notes on the circuits & adding a quick quiz after each type of circuit would be a good idea. Students add these sheets to their notebooks.

AP Physics 1 Electricity Problem Set
- Problem set built by Bob Enck, Dan Fullerton and Paul Sedita in an effort to start an AP-1 style problem bank. Feel free to print/use in your classrooms. Please don't re-post the files themselves, but rather only the links to the files, to allow us to quickly and easy update and continue to build upon these problems. Thank you! -- Dan Fullerton (
